Wildlife Photography & Observation Tour – Quijos
2 Days / 1 Night
Quijos is where the Andes meet the Amazon. Surrounded by cloud forest, wild rivers, and Andean mountains, this tour is designed for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and photography enthusiasts.
Accompanied by a local French-speaking guide with a passion for wildlife photography and the region's biodiversity, you will explore several reserves and natural sites that offer exceptional birdlife and wildlife viewing opportunities in environments that remain largely untouched by mass tourism.
To ensure a personal and high-quality experience, groups are limited to a maximum of 3 participants.
Day 1 – Sumaco, Río Quijos & Baeza
The day begins with a visit to Concierto de Aves in the Sumaco region, an excellent location for observing and photographing hummingbirds as well as a wide variety of cloud forest species. Highlights may include the Ecuadorian Motmot, the Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Green Jay, and many other colorful birds native to the eastern Andean foothills.
The site offers excellent photography conditions in a peaceful natural setting, with a small stream running through the property. It is ideal for both beginner and experienced photographers.
Later in the morning, we visit Río Quijos Lodge, where it is possible to observe several species of hummingbirds, colorful tanagers, river birds, and, with some luck, the famous Torrent Duck. The lodge also features several walking trails beneath the forest canopy.
Lunch is served on-site, surrounded by nature and the many birds that frequent the lodge grounds.
In the afternoon, we head to Baeza for a short walk to two beautiful waterfalls. Along the way, there are opportunities to observe additional bird species, orchids, tropical flowers, and a rich variety of plants typical of the Andean cloud forest.
Dinner is enjoyed at a welcoming local restaurant in Baeza, well known for hosting international visitors.
Return to San Francisco de Borja for an overnight stay in a peaceful village hotel.
Day 2 – Díaz de Pineda
Departure for El Bombón, one of the region's most rewarding locations for hummingbird photography.
This quiet and natural site offers excellent opportunities to photograph hummingbirds and other cloud forest birds. It is particularly known for species such as the Black-tailed Trainbearer, Gorgeted Woodstar, and several other tiny, fast-moving hummingbirds that are fascinating to observe and photograph.
The feeders and natural surroundings provide outstanding opportunities for flight photography and close-up observations.
Return to San Francisco de Borja around midday for lunch and the conclusion of the tour.
